The incident occurred on road 296 in Węgliniec (Zgorzelec County). “After a dramatic chase, officers from the Nadodrzański Border Guard Branch stopped an Audi A6 RS with German registration plates. Border Guard officers had previously signalled to the driver to stop, but the driver decided to try to escape and accelerated significantly,” says Border Guard Major Joanna Konieczniak, press spokeswoman for the Nadodrzański Border Guard Branch.

She adds:

While fleeing, the driver caused a collision and damaged a Border Guard vehicle. The collision caused the Audi to spin around and stop. The driver and passenger jumped out of the car and began to flee, but a roadblock had already been set up at the intersection, preventing the Audi driver from escaping further.

The passenger continued trying to escape and ran into a nearby forest. A Border Guard officer pursuing him drew his weapon and fired warning shots. This had the desired effect. The man was detained and subdued.

It turned out that the men were transporting almost 4 kilograms of methamphetamine in their vehicle, with a black-market value of more than PLN 400,000. Major J. Konieczniak explains:

Methamphetamine is a substance that has a very powerful effect on the body. Just 0.1 grams of this drug can intoxicate one person. Meanwhile, the quantity of drugs secured in the Audi—almost 4 kilograms of methamphetamine—could intoxicate as many as 40,000 people.

Nearly PLN 90,000 in various currencies was also secured. The 37- and 43-year-old men, who were temporarily remanded in custody for three months by the court at the request of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Zgorzelec, now face a sentence of between two and as many as twelve years in prison.

What is more, the Audi driver was also fined PLN 220 for causing the collision and PLN 50 for not having the vehicle documents. The man will additionally be held responsible for failing to stop for a roadside inspection and damaging an official Border Guard vehicle.
