Bomb-disposal specialists from the No. 23 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Patrol of the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment in Bolesławiec:

A very dangerous incident occurred in recent days in our area of responsibility, where an uncontrolled mortar-grenade explosion occurred while a forest fire was being extinguished.

At the scene, we found fragments of an 82 mm Russian mortar grenade within a radius of several dozen metres.

One fragment, measuring 3 x 6 cm, became embedded 16 cm deep in a growing tree.

Fortunately, no one was hurt, although the incident could have ended tragically. The bomb-disposal specialists said:

It was only by a narrow margin that [...] tragedy was avoided, as one of the firefighters was in close proximity to the explosion site. A single fragment from such a mortar grenade can travel several hundred metres during detonation.

The soldiers added:

For several years, we have been training firefighters on the dangers posed by explosive military ordnance and particularly dangerous locations in our area of responsibility, namely the counties of Bolesławiec, Zgorzelec, Lubań, Lwówek Śląski, Złotoryja, Jelenia Góra and Kamienna Góra.
