Our Reader asked us to publicize the matter. In an email to the editorial office, he wrote: “Please intervene regarding the terrible stench in Iwiny. For a week now, [mail otrzymaliśmy pod koniec sierpnia br. – przyp. red.] it has been impossible to open a window in my own home during the evening hours. The stench is so strong that spending any time outside the house is out of the question.” He added: “As far as I know, the smell comes from the surrounding fields, where waste, probably from a sewage treatment plant, is being spread.”
“If any waste is reaching the fields, it certainly does not come from our municipality,” Mirosław Haniszewski, Wójt of Warta Bolesławiecka, immediately emphasizes. In his view, however, the source of the stench is manure spread by farmers. “And I cannot forbid them from doing that,” Haniszewski explains. “Polish law does not allow me to. Even the President of the Republic of Poland himself could not help resolve this matter.”
The problem is not new. The Wójt has spoken to farmers about manure many times. “I appealed to the farmers to plow the fields immediately after spreading the fertilizer,” says Mirosław Haniszewski. “Whether this is being respected is difficult to say,” he adds.
Everything indicates that the residents of Iwiny have no choice but to hope that their neighbors will follow the Wójt’s appeal.
