The hospital director appeals to construction companies and shops that stock protective gowns to resell them or donate them to the hospital. This guarantees that the hospital will continue admitting patients.
The safety of medical personnel is paramount. A government grant to fight the virus was used to purchase 2,000 gowns and masks, as well as disinfectants, which is enough for seven days of hospital operations under the current conditions.
All patients in the infectious diseases ward of the hospital in Bolesławiec are in good condition, but spaces are still being prepared for people suspected of having the virus or already infected. People wait four days for tests, and the hospital’s capacity may be threatened if the Italian model materializes in Poland and the number of infected people increases.
Coveralls, caps, masks and goggles, as well as body disinfectants, are needed because these items are unavailable on the market, and when they do appear, their prices are greatly inflated. The hospital is continuously securing these supplies, but it has no reserves. In this respect, the hospital is operating from hour to hour.
Director Barczyk believes this is only the beginning and is preparing for a larger number of patients. This is the first time such a situation has occurred worldwide and, as the director says, no one is fully prepared for it. However, he trusts the authorities’ government decisions, counts on cooperation with the local government and on the social responsibility of people who will stay at home.
The basis for controlling the epidemic is following the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and the sanitary services, as well as announcements from local authorities, because these are reliable sources of information. Everyone must also take responsibility for their own health. Zespół Opieki Zdrowotnej w Bolesławcu issued an official announcement on its website, asking for support.
