The incident occurred on Monday, March 2, on the A4. The woman was travelling with two other people towards Zgorzelec. “At one point, she fell asleep and drove off the road. The vehicle rolled over three times before coming to a stop in a ditch. Legnica traffic police officers who arrived at the scene provided first aid to the injured until the ambulance arrived,” says Staff Sergeant Anna Tersa of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica. “Both the driver and one passenger were taken to a hospital in Legnica. Fortunately, their lives and health are not in danger.”

What do the officers advise?

  • before setting out on a journey, whether long or short, check your car. Above all, check the levels of operating fluids and ensure that the lights, indicators and brakes are working properly. Make sure the car is equipped with a warning triangle and a fire extinguisher
  • it is very important to be sober and rested when getting behind the wheel; your wellbeing should not give anyone cause for concern. If you take medication, read the leaflet and check whether it affects your ability to drive
  • once all the above recommendations have been followed, drive with caution and common sense. Strictly obey traffic regulations and adjust your speed to the road conditions
  • remember to fasten your seat belt and make sure your passengers have theirs fastened as well
  • if you need to talk on the phone while driving, use a hands-free kit. It is important that conversations are not long and do not distract you
  • during a long journey, it is recommended to take several breaks; get out of the vehicle, take in some fresh air and rest
  • remember to exercise particular caution, especially when approaching a pedestrian crossing. Pedestrians, in turn, should follow the principle of limited trust. The fact that a pedestrian can see an approaching vehicle does not at all mean that the driver can see the pedestrian
  • it is also important never to step onto a crossing directly in front of an approaching vehicle, as the driver may not have time to brake. You should also never enter the road from behind an obstacle. (Reflective elements play a major role in improving road safety, and the officers also encourage people to wear them in built-up areas.)
