The incident occurred on Thursday, 27 February, on Legnicka Street in Lubin, near a pedestrian crossing. According to the officers’ findings, a woman driving a Volkswagen passenger car noticed an elderly woman approaching the pedestrian crossing and stopped her vehicle to give the pedestrian right of way.
A 20-year-old resident of Bydgoszcz County was travelling in the same direction in a Mercedes passenger car. Wanting to avoid a collision with the Volkswagen in front of him, the man moved to the right and hit the barriers beside the crossing. A 79-year-old woman from Lubin who was standing there was injured and taken to hospital.
“The 20-year-old has already lost his driving licence. He told police officers that he had not seen the pedestrian standing in front of the crossing. He was sober at the time of the incident. His case will now be handled by the court,” says asp. szt. Sylwia Serafin, spokesperson for the District Police Headquarters in Lubin.
She adds:
Failure to follow regulations, excessive speed and alcohol are the main causes of accidents. Recklessness and thoughtlessness on the road often end in tragedy—for the injured person, the perpetrator of the incident and their families alike.
We therefore appeal to drivers to reduce their speed and drive carefully. Let us remember that visibility is one of the basic conditions for safety. That is why we appeal to pedestrians and cyclists to wear vests, other reflective elements or carry a torch.
Let us protect our lives and those of our loved ones—because we have only one.
