Grzegorz Turnau—a composer, singer and pianist, lyricist and arranger—was born on 31 July 1967 in Kraków. He learned to play the piano at the Ignacy Paderewski State Comprehensive Music School, first level, in Kraków, and is a graduate of Kraków’s August Witkowski 5th Secondary School. He studied English philology at the Jagiellonian University.
In 1984, while still a secondary-school student, he received first prize at the 20th Students’ Song Festival. Soon afterwards, he joined Piwnica pod Baranami, with which he was associated for 13 years. In 1991, his debut album, “Naprawdę nie dzieje się nic”, was released. Since then, he has released 16 solo albums and participated in several dozen other recording projects.
He composes music for film and theatre, including through his long-standing collaboration with director Jarosław Kilian. He is also the author of larger musical forms and, since 2016, has been the musical director of Teatr Lalka in Warsaw. Although he was born and lives in Kraków, he has been connected since childhood with the city of Inowrocław, whose honorary citizenship he received in 2013, as well as with the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, where Winnica Turnau is located—a vineyard founded by Grzegorz together with Zbigniew and Jacek Turnau and Tomasz Kasicki.
The artist has received numerous awards, including nine Fryderyks, two Wiktors and the Grand Prix of the Opole Festival. He has received the Gloria Artis Medal and the Golden Cross of Merit. In 2016, he was awarded the Kraków City Award in the field of culture and art.
