Road Traffic Bureau of the Polish Police Headquarters:
The “Vulnerable Road Users” police operation was launched out of concern for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists—road users who are in no way protected by a vehicle’s bodywork and are, in fact, at risk of coming into contact with it.
The “NURD” operation is part of a series of tasks carried out by the Police to improve road safety. Locations that are particularly dangerous for pedestrians will be monitored.
Importantly, the safety of pedestrians and cyclists in Poland improved in 2019 compared with 2018. “However, despite this improvement, it must be remembered that the risk of accidents remains real,” officers stress.
They add:
We remind drivers that, when approaching a pedestrian crossing, they should exercise particular caution and give way to a pedestrian on the crossing. Moreover, when turning into a side road, drivers are required to give way to a pedestrian crossing the carriageway of the road they are entering at the intersection.
And they address pedestrians and cyclists:
We also appeal to vulnerable road users to exercise common sense on the road and use reflective elements for their own safety—not only outside built-up areas, but on all unlit roads, including those in built-up areas.
Using reflective elements increases the visibility of pedestrians and cyclists several times over, giving drivers more time to perform an evasive manoeuvre, pass safely, or brake.
Let us remember: cooperation on the road and compliance with traffic regulations also help improve our safety.
