Polish Police Headquarters:
Although the primary objective of the operation will be to enforce compliance with the applicable speed limits among drivers, police officers will pay attention to every behavior that violates the law.
In 2019, vehicle drivers (mainly passenger-car drivers) caused more than 25,000 road accidents, in which 2,087 people died and more than 30,000 were injured. Although failure to yield right of way was the main cause of accidents, the deadliest cause remains, consistently for years, failure to adjust speed to traffic conditions.
It was excessive speed accompanying road accidents in 2019 that led to the deaths of 726 people. Importantly, it is dangerous not only for drivers and their passengers, but also for pedestrians. In pedestrian collisions, even a slight excess over the permitted speed reduces a person’s chances of survival. It is also worth noting that at high speeds, even the safest car cannot guarantee the driver and passengers survival.
Since May 18, 2015, Poland has had a regulation resulting in the suspension of a driver’s license for a driver who exceeds the speed limit by more than 50 km/h in a built-up area. At the beginning of the regulation’s implementation, a significant reduction in vehicle speeds in Poland was noticeable. There were also fewer road incidents resulting in bodily injury or death.
Uniformed officers:
Unfortunately, over the years, the regulation’s impact on drivers has significantly diminished. This year, we recorded more than 47,000 traffic checks resulting from this type of speeding violation. This figure is very worrying because, compared with the corresponding period in 2018, it increased by nearly 70%.
The stated aim of the police operation, according to the Polish Police Headquarters, is to reduce the number of road incidents. Marked and unmarked police cars will be used in the operation, including vehicles equipped with video recorders and handheld speed meters. Officers: – We can encounter both static speed-measurement points and dynamic measurements primarily in places where road-safety hazards occur.
