On 13 December, after 8:00 p.m., the duty officer at the District Police Headquarters in Zgorzelec received information about a road accident that occurred on the road out of Zgorzelec (DK30). Road traffic and prevention officers were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Police officers, including a forensic technician, initially determined that a 31-year-old resident of Zgorzelec County, while driving a Skoda and overtaking in a prohibited place, struck the side of a Renault, causing him to move into the opposite lane and collide head-on with an oncoming Nissan.

Four people were injured: the Skoda’s driver and passengers (aged 42 and 33, both also from Zgorzelec County), as well as a 44-year-old resident of Jelenia Góra County, the driver of the Nissan. The injured people were taken to different hospitals.

It emerged that the 31-year-old got behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol (more than one per mille in his system) and drugs. What is more, he did not have a driving licence, and the vehicle he was travelling in was not authorised for road use. Moreover, the registration plates were… in the boot.

The perpetrator of the accident will now answer for his actions before the court.
