The field training of the subunits of the 23rd Artillery Regiment is gaining momentum. The culmination of the fire activities of the Bolesławiec artillerymen during this year’s WRiA subunit grouping was the regiment’s Fire Direction Training exercise, conducted on 21 and 22 November with live ammunition.

The training began with the presentation of combat orders to the commanders of the participating subunits, after which the subunits moved to their designated firing-position areas. During the training, the execution of fire-support tasks by the divisional command posts (PKOD) was refined. For two days, the batteries of the 3rd Rocket Artillery Battalion (122 mm WR-40 Langusta) and the 1st Self-Propelled Artillery Battalion (152 mm DANA self-propelled howitzers) carried out missions from concealed firing positions during the day and under conditions of limited visibility.

Continuing the cooperation with the American artillerymen of the 16th Artillery Regiment (3-16 FAR), a battery of 155 mm PALADIN howitzers took part in the 23rd Artillery Regiment’s Fire Direction Training. It carried out fire missions in accordance with the “Call for fire” procedure as part of the self-propelled artillery battalion. The presence of the battery commander and US Army liaison officers at the regiment’s command post made it possible to improve cooperation in planning fire support and directing fire during combat operations.

In addition to synchronizing the engagement system, the combat coordination system was also refined in the area of regiment reconnaissance, using the standard reconnaissance assets, namely the RZRA LIWIEC and FLY EYE UAVs. They carried out tasks supporting imagery and electronic reconnaissance as well as the coordination of firing by the regiment’s subunits.

Once again, the firing conducted by the artillerymen from Bolesławiec enabled them to improve cooperation with other branches of the Armed Forces in reconnaissance and in the practical execution of the “Call for fire” procedure. The Fire Direction Training was attended by a forward observer section from the 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade and JTAC operators from the Military Unit of Commandos.

Summing up the two-day training, the commander of the 23rd Artillery Regiment, Colonel Grzegorz Potrzuski, thanked the soldiers for their professionalism and commitment, presenting letters of commendation to the best WR-40 Langusta crew and DANA howitzer gun detachment.
