Bolesławiec County Police Headquarters:
Before leaving home, let us make sure that we do not encounter an unpleasant surprise when we return from All Saints’ Day. Let us think about how to properly secure our flat. There is no perfect protection against burglary, but we can reduce the risk ourselves.
What can be done to avoid becoming victims of thieves?
- the best security measure is… a friendly neighbour. (The officers say: “Before leaving, let us ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on what happens to our flat during our absence. Let us leave a set of keys to our home with neighbours or friends. Let us ask them to open the windows from time to time and turn on the lights in the evening.”)
- before leaving, let us lock the doors and windows; in detached buildings, let us also remember to close roof and basement windows, garage doors and other utility-room doors through which a thief could easily enter our home
- let us not publicize information about our planned trip
- let us not leave such information on an answering machine
- let us try not to leave valuable items or cash in the flat.

Let us also remember to turn off the water and gas valves.
