As the Nowogrodziec firefighters wrote on their Facebook profile:

Our men help not only during emergencies and rescue operations. They regularly give away what is most precious and needed by many people. A part of themselves.

Why is blood so important?

Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre in Wałbrzych:

The number of patients needing blood is increasing rapidly, while the number of people able to donate blood is falling (a large number of disqualifications). This sad reality could potentially affect every one of us.

Blood cannot be manufactured; only another person can share it. Currently, blood is used, among others, by people suffering from leukemia and other cancers, accident victims, and transplant recipients.

The Centre adds:

This precious gift is used by both newborns and older people. As early as next week, the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre, together with the blood donors’ club from Bolesławiec, will organize a blood drive in Bolesławiec. Every new donor is worth their weight in gold.

Let us remember—blood donation drives are not cultural events but our shared insurance policy.

Who can become a blood donor?

Blood may be donated by a person who:

  • is aged 18–65 and has an identity document with a photograph and address
  • has an appropriate body weight: over 50 kg
  • has not suffered from jaundice, syphilis, psoriasis or diabetes
  • has not undergone surgery, endoscopic procedures, tattooing, ear piercing or piercing of other body parts during the past 6 months
  • does not have serious diseases of the circulatory, digestive, nervous, respiratory or urinary systems.

Importantly, women cannot donate blood during menstruation or for three days after it ends.
