PKP PLK:

In mid-December, residents of the Copper Basin will gain a new, convenient rail connection. The services to Wrocław via Legnica that have operated since June will be joined by trains from Legnica via Lubin and Rudna Gwizdanów to Głogów. As part of a project carried out by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. at a cost of nearly PLN 200 million, work between Lubin and Rudna Gwizdanów is nearing completion. There will be a new Lubin Stadion stop.

Following the resumption in June of passenger services on the Legnica–Lubin section, PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. is preparing the Lubin–Rudna Gwizdanów section for operation. This will allow passenger services to resume on the entire 40-km section being modernized on 15 December, together with the new timetable.

Freight trains may begin running as early as October. Passengers currently have convenient platforms at Rzeszotary, Raszówka, Gorzelina, Chróstnik and Lubin.

In December, trains from Lubin will also run toward Głogów

The main work on the 18-km Lubin–Rudna Gwizdanów section is nearing completion. The tracks have been replaced and the overhead catenary has been renovated. Modernized traffic-control systems will ensure safe passenger travel and freight transport. Engineering structures have been rebuilt and railway-road crossings modernized. Technical inspections are under way, allowing freight services to resume first. These are important connections for businesses in the Copper Basin, especially KGHM.

Important for supporters

The new additional Lubin Stadion stop will make getting around the city easier. It will also provide rail access for residents of northern Lubin, as well as visitors to the stadium and one of Poland’s largest automotive markets.

For passengers’ comfort, new platforms have been built between Lubin and Rudna at stations and stops in Rudna Gwizdanów, Rudna Miasto, Rynarcice and Koźlice. Finishing work includes, among other things, installing equipment, shelters, boards and signage.

At Koźlice, a new railway overpass will replace the crossing

A railway overpass has been built immediately next to the former Koźlice stop, replacing the existing level crossing. It will improve passenger safety and traffic flow. A roadway and sidewalk are being prepared beneath the 11-meter-wide overpass, which is 8 m wide and almost 5 m high.

The platforms have been relocated to the overpass. Access for people with reduced mobility has been provided; stairs and elevators are being built. The overpass has passed load tests and been approved for use. Construction used, among other materials, 232 tonnes of reinforcing steel, 3 500 m3 of concrete and 21.5 tonnes of railings. Finishing work around the platforms and roadwork are currently under way.

Better transport in the Copper Basin

The investment will increase the line’s capacity, allowing trains to run more frequently. Shorter and more comfortable rail journeys will become a real alternative to other means of transport. The company:

Rail transport will become more accessible to everyone, including people with reduced mobility. Heavy freight transport will use the railway tracks, helping relieve roads and improve environmental conditions.

As part of the project covering nearly 40 km of the line, the tracks, overhead catenary and railway traffic-control equipment have been renovated. The reconstruction covered 3 stations and 6 stops. Once modernization is complete, passenger trains will travel at up to 120 km/h and freight trains at up to 80 km/h.

The Legnica–Rudna Gwizdanów line is the main freight route of the Legnica–Głogów Copper District. It also links two major railway routes: line E 30, running from the western border through Węgliniec, Legnica and Wrocław to Przemyśl, and line 273, known as the Nadodrzanka, connecting Wrocław, Głogów, Zielona Góra and Szczecin. The investment is worth more than PLN 197 million net.

The timetable in effect from 15 December 2019 schedules a total of 19 pairs of passenger trains on the Legnica–Rudna Gwizdanów line. There will be 14 pairs operated by Koleje Dolnośląskie: 6 pairs between Legnica and Lubin and 8 pairs between Legnica and Głogów. This includes 9 direct trains from Wrocław to Lubin and 12 from Lubin to Wrocław.

There will also be 5 pairs of PKP Intercity trains, including services on the following routes: Wien Hbf–Budapest Keleti–Przemyśl Główny–Berlin Charlottenburg; Bielsko-Biała Główna–Świnoujście; Lublin–Szczecin Główny; Katowice–Świnoujście; Kraków Główny–Szczecin Główny.

The fastest trains will take 13 minutes without stops and 18 minutes with stops on the Legnica–Lubin section. On the Lubin–Rudna Gwizdanów section, the journey will take 10 minutes without stops and 15 minutes with stops.
