A report about the story of Hubert was broadcast on TVP’s Magazyn Ekspresu Reporterów. The report about a resident of a neighboring county who suffered a serious accident in Bolesławiec can be viewed on vod.tvp.pl. It begins at 23 minutes 30 seconds.
Let us recall. The accident happened in August 2017, in the afternoon, on Jagiellonów Street. The then 21-year-old resident of Lwówek County, who was carrying out construction work in one of the houses, injured his carotid artery with an angle grinder.
The man was taken to the Bolesławiec hospital in critical condition. After the operation, an Air Ambulance Service helicopter was called and transported the injured man to a hospital in the capital of Lower Silesia. (We wrote about this case several times in our articles.)
How can you help?
A fundraiser was organized for Hubert. Details are available at pomagam.pl. The organizers:
Hubert is currently at home, where he receives daily rehabilitation from a specialist. Each rehabilitation session costs money, so additional expenses are incurred.
And they add:
We once again make a heartfelt appeal to people with generous hearts for financial help for Hubert. Thank you in advance.
Hubert’s mother:
I saw him when he came into the world, when he was tiny and helpless. Twenty-one years have passed since then, during which I cared for him, worried about him, rejoiced in his successes and worried like every mother. Now, after those 21 years, fate has made it so that all I dream of is taking him home, so that he can live and breathe independently...
My little boy grew into a healthy young man, and lost everything he had in an instant. He survived by a miracle, and a miracle has allowed him to remain with me. I saw photographs from the place where it all happened. There was blood in those photographs… a great deal of my child’s blood, and today he suffers only because he was unlucky.
Hubert went to work as he did every day. He was working on the construction of a house, where that day he was supposed to widen an opening in a wall. He completed half the work with a colleague, then there was a short break and the second part.
It was 2 p.m., and the working day was slowly coming to an end, when Hubert’s colleague heard the sound of a grinder falling… Silence fell, from which Hubert emerged, holding his neck. He walked slowly toward the stairs. When he reached the edge, he staggered and would probably have fallen if not for his colleague’s help. Blood spurted from beneath his hands... A broken grinder disc struck his neck, cutting the arteries and veins on the right side—Hubert fainted…
Blood began to spurt in rhythm with his heartbeat; everyone panicked. Only the third ambulance to arrive was able to help him. Hubert was taken to hospital, but the doctors there could not reconnect all the blood vessels. A helicopter and a rapid transfer between hospitals were needed. It all took a very long time.
My little son’s heart stopped for a full 20 minutes. That is too long to save both his life and his health. Ischemic brain damage occurred—an ischemic stroke in the right hemisphere that caused devastation. Acute cardiopulmonary failure, coma, lack of consciousness.
No doctor gave me any guarantee that everything would be all right. They told me to wait, and that waiting was what I feared most. In the intensive care unit, I saw my little son connected to all those cables. Machines did everything for him, while I could only cry helplessly. My little son lost half of his brain, lost a normal life and everything that went with it. He will never speak to me again, never have a conversation. But a mother’s heart expects only one thing from her child—that he will be there, exist, live…
