As part of the nationwide operation—already being conducted for the fifth time this year—officers will pay particular attention to drivers’ behavior toward pedestrians, especially around marked pedestrian crossings, while also carefully checking whether pedestrians are violating traffic regulations.
National Police Headquarters Traffic Bureau:
It is worth emphasizing that this year, compared with the corresponding period in 2018, the number of road accidents involving pedestrians has decreased. Nevertheless, half of all accidents involving pedestrians took place at designated crossings.
Unfortunately, despite the many preventive measures taken by the police in this area, pedestrian crossings continue to be dangerous places, even though their very purpose should be to guarantee road users a safe crossing of the carriageway.
During the ongoing nationwide operation, police officers will also pay more attention to violations occurring in interactions between car drivers and two-wheeled vehicle users.
Officers:
Spring weather encourages people to use the latter, and those riding them—as with every road user—are at risk of being involved in a traffic accident. They should remember that the smaller dimensions of two-wheeled vehicles make them more difficult for others to notice. Each rider should be aware that another road user may fail to see them on the road.
Accordingly, the way they travel on the road should be adapted to traffic conditions, reducing the risk of an accident.
What does the police advise car drivers?
The officers say: “Car drivers should be especially vigilant when crossing bicycle crossings and at intersections, where the risk of a road accident is high because traffic directions intersect in conflict.”
Police officers will place particularly dangerous locations under special supervision—places where the risk of undesirable road incidents is greatest.
At the same time, educational initiatives are being conducted in which police officers provide road users with information about pedestrian hazards on the road and the need to know and comply with legal regulations.
