We have a video of the widely reported citizen’s arrest.

As a reminder, a reader informed us that on Sunday, April 7, in the evening, in Tomisław (Osiecznica commune), he made a citizen’s arrest of a drunk driver.

The person who reported the incident took the keys from the 60-year-old resident of Osiecznica commune and notified the police.

When the officers arrived at the scene, as the reader says, after about an hour, it turned out that the 60-year-old had—quite astonishingly—almost 2.8 per mille of alcohol in his system.

The drunk driver was detained. He now faces up to two years in prison.

>>> The video was removed at the family’s request.

A detailed account by Adam Maj:

I will tell you about what happened today, that is, April 7, 2019. I was at my mother’s having a barbecue when a friend contacted me to go out for a beer, and I agreed. We went to a shop in Tomisław and each got a beer. We went to drink it outdoors, in a non-public place.

After finishing it, we wanted another one and returned to the same shop, outside which we met some friends. We chatted for a while. Suddenly, a Volvo with an older driver pulled up outside the shop. His wife went inside to buy some groceries—as it turned out, alcohol—and then my friend noticed that the Volvo’s hood was not fully closed. I approached the driver to inform him, and he said that the car had been in a crash and that was how it was supposed to be. So, without worrying about it, I returned to my friends.

But after a minute, the driver got out of the aforementioned vehicle and closed the hood! Then we noticed that he was clearly under the influence of alcohol. I decided to intervene because I felt I had to—the video of the intervention is above.

I was not mistaken: an hour after the report, the guy blew over two per mille. That is f***ing a lot! After a while, I learned from friends that this was not his first time and that he had been driving drunk for at least a year. I took the keys from the ignition and called the police, while the outraged guy left the scene!

I have some advice for you, people!

Don’t be afraid to intervene! 200 ml of beer contains 10 mg of ethyl alcohol, the same amount as a shot of vodka; all alcoholic drinks contain ethyl alcohol, just in different concentrations, which impairs our reflexes behind the wheel and our common sense when making decisions in the event of a road hazard, potentially causing a serious accident.

The perpetrator’s family will probably resent me after this situation, but perhaps thanks to my decision and the courage I showed in taking action, I saved someone’s life!!!

I reacted this way because two years ago I lost my father in a car accident in which the driver and all the passengers were under the influence of alcohol. If someone had intervened then, as I did today, my dad would still be alive!

A warning to everyone! Don’t be afraid to intervene when you see a drunk driver; prevent him from continuing to drive, and you may save someone’s life! Each of us has only one!
