Today, police across the country are carrying out the “Smog” inspection and prevention operation, which aims to “remove from the roads vehicles whose technical condition fails to meet environmental protection requirements, for example due to excessive smoke from the exhaust system.”

As reported on the website of the County Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec:

Police officers will also respond to other traffic violations related to the technical condition of vehicles. These activities will make it possible to remove from the roads defective vehicles that pose a threat to safety and excessively pollute the natural environment.

The officers point out:

The operation also has an educational purpose. Let us remember that transport, particularly in large cities, contributes to deteriorating air quality. Officers will remind drivers that the smog affecting people’s lives is also “the fault” of technically defective vehicles emitting exhaust fumes with excessive toxicity.

Selected police patrols will use inspection and measuring devices to determine whether environmental protection requirements have been violated.

The police add:

We remind drivers that, in connection with overseeing the safety and orderly flow of road traffic, a police officer is authorized, among other things, to check the technical condition of a vehicle on the road. If it is established or there are reasonable grounds to believe that a vehicle violates environmental protection requirements, a police officer, pursuant to Article 132(1)(1)(c) of the Road Traffic Act, is obliged to confiscate the vehicle registration certificate.
