The incident occurred in Miłoszów (Lubań County).
As reported on the Facebook profile of the Lower Silesian Animal Protection Inspectorate, which intervened at the horror-like farm:
The report in this case came from an official who noticed the complete inaction of the relevant services, whose task was to take immediate action. In Miłoszów, the animals had been howling from hunger for weeks and were dying as a result. According to witnesses, the cries of the dying animals were terrifying, yet no one took any action. The stench of carrion hung around the property.
During the intervention, inspectors found an emaciated heifer standing in the cowshed beside a cow that had died of starvation. Chickens had pecked out the dead cow’s eye, while the remaining domestic birds were pecking at the other dead animals—pigs and chickens. Some were lying on the manure heap, while several had been partially buried in the yard—there are no words to describe what DIOZ inspectors found at the farm.
What is more, inspectors found a woman with nine children, most of them disabled, and two drunk men at the farm:
For months, the children had been playing in the yard, where animal carcasses protruded from the ground!! The owner clearly stated that the animals belonged to her husband and that, because he had abused her, she would not take care of them. She said that she had money, received PLN 10,000 a month, and would not look after the animals.
DIOZ stresses that the Veterinary Inspection in Lubań had “excellent knowledge” of the case but “demonstrated complete inaction regarding inspections of the animals’ welfare.”
The DIOZ inspectors’ intervention lasted nine hours. The reason? According to the activists, the police failed to do their job. Fortunately, the mayor and secretary of the Leśna Municipality arrived at the scene:
[…] they demonstrated complete professionalism. They supported our decision to remove the animals and were deeply concerned by the situation they found at the scene. We managed to remove the heifer, Vietnamese pigs, goats, a rabbit and pigeons from the farm, and they were immediately transported to our temporary home. Immediate treatment was initiated for the animals, and they were given food. The mother of the nine children was placed in custody, while the children are under the care of their oldest siblings. The woman could face up to five years in prison.
“The bellowing of cows starving to death, the squealing of pigs, the stench of carrion detectable far from the farm, and carcasses in plain sight—all of this must have been heard, smelled and seen by numerous neighbors. The same applies to MOPS employees, since the family was under the care of the center; from December onward, a family assistant must surely have visited the farm. Did they not see what was happening there? I still cannot comprehend such extreme callousness, or the fact that such things can happen in the presence of numerous witnesses,” Konrad Kuźmińskinj24.pl from DIOZ told
“Nowiny Jeleniogórskie”:
Ultimately, the animals were taken away. They are currently in a temporary shelter, receiving care and treatment. They will be available for adoption.
