The new identity card will, as before, confirm the identity and citizenship of its holder and entitle them to cross the borders of certain countries. In addition, the electronic ID card will be used to authenticate its holder when accessing public administration e-services and to sign electronic documents. It will also enable the holder’s presence to be confirmed in external ICT systems, particularly healthcare systems.
The issuance of new identity cards with an electronic layer will begin in March 2019. The process of replacing identity cards will be spread over 10 years and continue until 2029.
If the holder of an identity card of the current design wishes to use an electronic ID card, they will be able to replace it before the current document expires.
