Although there is no legal obligation to have fire extinguishers at home, it is worth having them. As firefighters emphasize, extinguishers often make it possible to put out a fire at its source, and if that is not possible, at least to limit its spread.
If there were an obligation to have fire extinguishers, many misfortunes could probably be avoided. But even though there is no such requirement, we can take care of our own safety ourselves. A 1-kilogram fire extinguisher costs around PLN 25–35. However, it is better to invest in a fire extinguisher for cooking fats. It is larger and slightly more expensive (around PLN 80), but it can handle both a kitchen fire (putting out a burning pan with water is a common mistake) and, for example, a fire involving a wall next to a fireplace.
As noted by a resident of Bolesławiec municipality, whose house caught fire twice in the past 18 months, the first reaction when a fire breaks out is panic. But having a fire extinguisher means that you immediately have a way to fight the fire. And as we know, the first seconds are very important.
