Before leaving home, let’s make sure that we don’t encounter an unpleasant surprise when we return from our holiday break. Let’s think about how to properly secure our apartment.

How can you secure your apartment?

There are no perfect protections against burglary, but we can minimize the risk ourselves. The best protection for an apartment is… a considerate neighbor.

Before leaving, therefore, let’s ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on what happens to our apartment during our absence. Let’s entrust neighbors or friends with a set of keys to our home. Let’s ask them to open the windows from time to time and turn on the lights in the evening; to remove advertising leaflets from the doormat and take the correspondence out of the mailbox.

Before leaving, let’s lock the doors and windows, and in detached buildings, let’s remember to close the roof and basement windows, garage doors and other utility-room doors through which a thief could easily get into our home. Let’s not publicize information about our planned departure, and let’s not leave such information on the answering machine.

Let’s try not to leave valuable items or cash in the apartment. Let’s also remember to turn off the water and gas valves.

What else is worth remembering?

It is also worth remembering to secure your car. Park in a designated, well-lit and guarded place. Do not leave luggage or other items in visible places inside the vehicle – it is best to take them with you.
