The accident occurred around noon at a railway crossing near the village of Kierżno, between Bolesławiec and Zebrzydowa. For unknown reasons, the driver of a Fiat 126p drove directly into the path of an approaching train on the Wrocław–Dresden route.
The removal of the accident’s aftermath took several hours. Railway traffic has already been restored. Because of the accident, the Wrocław–Dresden train was delayed by 133 minutes. The Dresden–Wrocław train, meanwhile, was delayed by two hours.
Initial findings indicate that the crossing was functioning properly. Lights and an audible signal indicated that a train was approaching. In addition, there is a stop sign before the crossing. However, the driver did not stop.
