As part of Operation “Znicz 2018”, conducted from October 31 to November 4, 2018, officers will help road users reach cemeteries safely. During the operation, police officers will check, among other things:
- compliance with speed limits on roads leading to cities
- the use of seat belts and child restraint systems
- drivers’ sobriety and the technical condition of vehicles
- compliance with restrictions and the ban on the movement of vehicles and vehicle combinations with a permissible maximum gross weight exceeding 12 tonnes, excluding buses
- the proper use of vehicles’ external lights
- whether pedestrians travelling on roads after dark outside built-up areas use reflective elements.
Criminal investigation officers and prevention officers will patrol the areas around cemeteries and church grounds. Railway and bus stations, as well as public transport, will also be subject to increased supervision.
How not to be robbed during the holidays?
Let us remember not to take more money to the cemetery than we need. Do not carry documents, money, keys or valuables in shopping bags or in open large clothing pockets. (Purses, wallets, phones and bank cards, as well as keys, should be kept in a closed inside pocket of your clothing.)
When using public transport, always keep your handbag or backpack in front of you and hold it in your hand. Do not leave your belongings by graves without proper supervision. Sometimes just a moment of inattention—for example, stepping away from a burial site to get water for flowers or walking to a bin with rubbish—is enough to become a victim of theft.
Be careful when getting on and off a bus. Whenever possible, avoid crowds and people you have just met (in this case, apply the principle of limited trust).
How to reach and return from the cemetery safely?
Let us remember that traffic increases significantly during the holidays, particularly around cemeteries. Fog and rain often make driving difficult. Adjust your speed to the prevailing road conditions. It is worth driving more slowly to reach your destination safely.
Pedestrians should also remember to behave safely on the road—especially around cemeteries. Roads should be crossed only at marked pedestrian crossings or at places designated for this period.
In the evening and at night, when travelling on roads outside built-up areas, we should wear reflective elements, such as reflectors attached to a bag or reflective vests. This will make us more visible to drivers travelling on the road and, consequently, increase our safety.
Let us be kind and understanding towards one another during this period. Let us exercise caution and act in such a way that everyone returns home safely.
