On Thursday, October 11, a ceremony marking National Education Day was held at the Old Theatre in Bolesławiec.

Bolesławiec County head Karol Stasik spoke:

On National Education Day, I would like to express my appreciation for the effort of creative work, dedication and heart devoted every day to educating young generations and contributing to the development of education in our county.

From you—esteemed teachers, educators and form teachers—young people learn how to be upright citizens, employees and parents.

Proof of your professionalism and systematic work is provided by the numerous participations of students from our schools in competitions and academic contests. The results of the secondary-school leaving and vocational examinations should be regarded as outstanding achievements. This also includes this year’s secondary-school leaving examination, which students from our schools passed with the best results in the voivodeship—as one of only three counties—achieving results approximately 2.6% higher than the national average.

He added:

In a situation of declining educational subsidies, meeting contemporary requirements concerning students’ competencies, the standard of teaching and modern educational facilities is a difficult task for county authorities. The county is carrying out these tasks by committing its own funds.

This year, we allocated approximately PLN 10.7 million for this purpose, including nearly PLN 5.6 million for current tasks—which, with a subsidy of PLN 31 million, represents 25% of expenditure. For the same reasons, we have focused on obtaining European Union funding.

Another organizational challenge lies ahead of us as a result of the education reform being implemented: a radical increase in the number of students at our schools from 2019.

Analyses conducted by the Education Department show that we are prepared for this challenge in terms of facilities, and there will also be no problems with teaching staff for general-education subjects. We intend to address the shortage of vocational teachers by establishing even closer cooperation with industry and entrepreneurs.

The county head also mentioned teachers’ salaries:

On this occasion, I would like to mention pay-related matters. To exclude the impact of the latest pay rises from this information, I am providing data for 2017. Teachers’ pay in the various promotion-grade groups was more than PLN 1.25 million higher than the amounts resulting from the Teachers’ Charter. Per full-time position in the individual promotion-grade groups, this amounts to between PLN 300 and PLN 624 per month.
