Policewomen from the police station in Pieńsk, while on their way to work, noticed an oncoming vehicle performing dangerous and erratic manoeuvres on the road. At one point, it suddenly moved into the opposite lane, forcing one of the officers to brake sharply and take evasive action.
When the policewomen approached the man sitting behind the wheel, they smelled alcohol on his breath. Suspecting that the driver was intoxicated, they prevented him from continuing to drive and informed the duty officer at the District Police Headquarters in Zgorzelec by telephone.
Officers sent to the scene checked the driver's sobriety. He had more than 1.5 per mille of alcohol in his system.
The police detained the 50-year-old and confiscated his driving licence. He now faces up to another two years in prison.
