On Thursday, 9 August, officers from the KPP Bolesławiec will conduct a Vulnerable Road Users operation on the roads of our county. The officers will pay particular attention to drivers’ behaviour towards pedestrians and cyclists, while also closely observing whether the “vulnerable road users” violate traffic regulations.
What are pedestrians not allowed to do?
- enter the roadway from behind an obstacle
- walk on the wrong side of the roadway
- walk on the roadway when the shoulder or pavement can be used
- cross the roadway in a prohibited place
- run directly in front of a vehicle
- step onto a pedestrian crossing when the light is red or flashing green
- enter the roadway without making sure that no vehicle is approaching
- walk in pairs on a busy roadway instead of in single file.
What obligations do drivers have?
When approaching a pedestrian crossing, a vehicle driver must exercise particular caution and give way to a pedestrian who is on the crossing (Article 26(1) of the Road Traffic Act).
What should cyclists remember?
Vulnerable road users also include cyclists. Since a cyclist’s visibility in traffic is a very important aspect of their safety, the police remind people that bicycles must be equipped with lights.
What equipment should a properly equipped bicycle have?
- lights:
- front – a white or selective-yellow position light
- rear – one red reflector of a shape other than a triangle and one red position light, which may be flashing
- fully operational brakes
- a bell or another warning signal with a non-penetrating sound.
Officers:
We appeal to vulnerable road users to wear reflective elements and, when cycling, to use protective helmets and pads.
