We received additional information about the incident from a reader:
The man from the ground-floor apartment did not escape; he tried to put out the fire himself from outside through a basement window. He had previously fought the fire inside, but had to go outside because of the smoke. My wife was woken by our female bulldog, Suri. A little heroine. My wife smelled smoke and went outside to see what was happening. Our son was still asleep. It was 6:00 a.m. The firefighters did in fact call an ambulance because it turned out that our son had been poisoned. He spent three days in hospital undergoing examinations and was given oxygen. Unfortunately, I was at work when it happened.
