The incident occurred on April 14, at approximately 5:30 p.m., on the road from Czerwieńsk to Zielona Góra. The driver of an Opel Astra passenger car, traveling from the direction of Płoty, lost control of the vehicle on a bend, struck an energy-absorbing barrier, and then, bouncing off it, crossed into the opposite lane, where he hit a 33-year-old cyclist who was riding correctly. Immediately after the incident, the driver tried to flee, but he was detained by witnesses to the accident and handed over to police officers. One of the witnesses gave the police a dashcam recording showing the incident.
The detained man—the perpetrator of the accident—had a strong odor of alcohol about him, but refused to undergo a sobriety test. Police decided to collect blood for testing not only for alcohol in his system, but also for intoxicants. The driver turned out to be a 36-year-old Russian citizen. The man was detained, and his car was secured in a police parking lot.
As a result of the incident, the 33-year-old cyclist sustained serious injuries: a broken jaw and fractures to both arms. Through the prosecutor, police applied to the court for the man's temporary detention. The District Court in Zielona Góra granted the application and decided to detain the 36-year-old for three months.
