The incident occurred on February 13, at around 8:40 p.m., in Legnica. The duty officer at the Municipal Police Headquarters received a report of a break-in at the premises of one of the businesses located on Poznańska Street.

A patrol was dispatched to the scene. The officers noticed a Ford vehicle traveling at excessive speed. They immediately signaled the driver to stop.

However, he had no intention of stopping. He fled through the streets of Legnica, disregarding all traffic regulations. His reckless driving forced other road users to leave their lanes and escape onto the shoulder; he deliberately cut off the police officers.

At one point, the driver struck the side of a police car, then left the scene and sped toward the newly constructed section of the S3 route, which is currently closed to traffic. Driving along the road at tremendous speed, the driver deliberately switched off his dipped headlights. He drove onto the sandy surface, raising clouds of dust and dirt in order to prevent the officers from continuing the pursuit.

Suddenly, the 24-year-old stopped the vehicle in the middle of the road. The driver and two 16-year-old girls ran out of the car. To avoid colliding with the girls, the police officers drove into the vehicle abandoned by the fugitive. Two officers suffered serious bodily injuries. (Despite their injuries, the officers detained both 16-year-olds.) Other officers who had joined the pursuit earlier apprehended the person responsible for the accident.

The teenagers were taken to a police juvenile holding facility, while the 24-year-old man was placed in police custody.

At the request of the police and the prosecutor’s office, the court ordered the 24-year-old held in pre-trial detention for three months. The man faces up to 12 years in prison.
