On December 4, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra opened an investigation into a fire in a tenement building in Piechowice, which occurred during the night of December 2–3. Three children, aged 8, 6 and 4, died as a result of the incident.

It is already known that the fire started in the apartment on the ground floor. (An inspection was carried out with the participation of a fire-expertise specialist.) A number of people were questioned as witnesses, including the mother of the deceased children, who was not in the apartment at the time of the incident, as well as the grandfather of the three children, who was looking after them when the fire broke out.

Documentation from the Municipal Social Welfare Center in Piechowice concerning the affected family was also secured. “The Prosecutor’s Office will also verify whether the authorities authorized to do so properly monitored whether the minor children were receiving appropriate care from their family,” says Tomasz Czułowski, press spokesperson for the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Jelenia Góra.

The other residents of the tenement building were unharmed. Those responsible for causing this tragedy could face up to eight years in prison.
