The Sejm Knowledge Competition was held under the patronage of Marshal Marek Kuchciński. After listening to a presentation about the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, secondary-school students began solving the tasks. MP Zofia Czernow, who organized the event, thanked Mirosław Sakowski, headmaster of II General Secondary School, for his commitment and assistance.
The MP invited mainly final-year classes to the competition, because questions of this kind appear in examinations taken during the matura. The MP also believes that every Pole should have knowledge of how the Sejm operates.
“It is worthwhile for young people to know about Polish parliamentary traditions; laws are drafted here, the law is created here, and people need to know how this happens,” said the MP. “This is knowledge about who may submit motions and bills and who has legislative initiative. It is not easy, but this knowledge is essential and every Pole must have it. When young people visit the Sejm—and this year more than a thousand students from our region did so—they truly benefit from the visit. A visit to the Sejm only makes sense when one has knowledge about the institution. Therefore, when the opportunity arose to organize a competition under the auspices of the Marshal of the Sejm, I decided that we had to take advantage of it. Young people take the competition very seriously; I saw how attentively they listened to the lecture. Representatives of the Sejm stated that the results achieved by young people in this competition are very high,” added Zofia Czernow.
Last year, the Sejm Knowledge Competition was held in Jelenia Góra. First there is a lecture, followed by a test of knowledge about the Sejm, after which the winners are selected. The first prize is the Marshal of the Sejm’s award; it went to Magdalena Trawniczek and Przemysław Kania from II General Secondary School in Bolesławiec. There are then two awards from the Chancellery of the Sejm. Zofia Czernow funded six awards. Each participant also receives small gifts from the Chancellery of the Sejm.
