The 27-year-old Ukrainian citizen who, under the influence of alcohol (1.8 per mille), killed two teenage girls from Jelenia Góra on New Year's Eve is guilty of the acts with which he was charged, the District Court in Jelenia Góra ruled today. The combined sentence is 9 years and 1 month in prison, as well as a lifetime driving ban.

The court took into account the mitigating circumstance of Vladyslaw K's previous clean record, as well as the positive opinion of his Polish employer. For this reason, it did not impose the maximum sentence of 12 years in prison.

– This is a lower sentence than we requested. It is too low. We will apply for the written grounds and appeal against the length of the sentence, prosecutor Anna Surowiak from the Jelenia Góra prosecutor's office says.

– As court-appointed counsel, I will undoubtedly want to prepare an appeal, unless my client decides otherwise, says the convicted man's attorney, Wacław Majewski.

Let us recall that the tragedy occurred on New Year's Eve, before midnight, on Sobieskiego Street in Jelenia Góra. The 27-year-old driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, for unknown reasons, veered off the road, hit two teenage girls, aged 14 and 16, broke through the barriers and fell into the river.

The driver was drunk. Both he and the 23-year-old female passenger in the Jeep were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
