The incident occurred on July 25, during the night. Police officers from Lubin were called at around 2:00 a.m. It turned out that the 50-year-old resident of Polkowice operating the locomotive was completely drunk; he had nearly 2.5 per mille of alcohol in his breath. While carrying out a maneuver to reposition the locomotive, the man struck a railcar, causing its axle to come off the tracks. Fortunately, the incident occurred on a siding, so no one was injured and there were no disruptions to transport.
The train driver faces up to two years in prison.
