The incident occurred last weekend. The Lubin police duty officer received information that whining was coming from the trunk of one of the cars parked outside a hypermarket. At the scene, officers found a locked car parked in full sunlight. The vehicle’s owner was nowhere nearby, and the temperature had reached 30 degrees Celsius.
One of the officers went into the store to deliver a message to the owner over the loudspeaker. Time was running out, however, and the cries of the animals trapped in the trunk were becoming increasingly desperate. The police officer therefore smashed a window.
It turned out that the trunk contained 8 Labrador puppies. The dogs were exhausted. A veterinarian took them to a veterinary clinic. According to the veterinarian, the officers rescued the Labradors at the last possible moment. (The officer who removed them from the overheated car, and who has worked with police dogs every day for many years, said afterward that he had never heard an animal make such terrifying cries and whines.)
The officers established that the owner of all eight puppies was transporting them to Germany on a dirty cloth, intending to sell them there. The 29-year-old was detained and taken into police custody. He faces up to two years in prison.
