The incident occurred in one of the tenement buildings in central Legnica. At the scene, officers from the Prevention Department of the Municipal Police Headquarters received information from one of the witnesses that a man was inside the burning apartment. Without hesitation, the officers ran into the stairwell and, despite the choking smoke and high temperature, forced open the door to the apartment and pulled out the victim. In doing so, they saved his life.
Staff Sergeant Mateusz Sobczyk and Senior Staff Sergeant Remigiusz Kowalczyk were honored for their professionalism, responsibility and courage by the Lower Silesian Provincial State Fire Service Commander in Wrocław, Senior Brigadier Adam Konieczny, the Municipal State Fire Service Commander in Legnica, Junior Brigadier Zdzisław Sokół, and the mayor of the city, Tadeusz Krzakowski. Meanwhile, the Municipal Police Commander, Inspector Leszek Zagórski, recognized the heroic officers with a cash award.
