The tenement building at 19/21 Prusa Street. Almost in the city centre. For years, there have been neither proper doors nor an intercom here. When winter approaches, homeless people come almost every day. They have turned the stairwell into a place to sleep and a toilet. “Someone is constantly relieving themselves. Stench, dirt, empty bottles of alcohol,” sums up Adriana Świerniak. – “It’s frightening to enter the house. You never know who you’ll find.”
Homeless people bring duvets here and sleep. The stairwell is dirty. “We live like in a slum,” complains Weronika Zwierzyńska, who has lived on Prusa Street for five years. If it were not for the cleaners, it would be impossible to get through. What is more, thefts occur. “They have broken into our cellar three times in five years,” says Zwierzyńska. For this reason, the residents of the tenement do not keep anything valuable in their cellars. Franciszka Pastuszak keeps jars of preserves at home. “They even steal our light bulbs from the cellar,” adds Świerniak.
Previously, decisions about repairs were made by the housing community by majority vote. The problem is that two tenants have died. One of the flats is empty. Adriana Świerniak would like to build a small room in the attic for her child. She cannot do this without the owner’s consent. However, no one knows how to find him.
The tenement building is managed by the Social Building Society. “I have lived here for 38 years. They have not carried out a single renovation during that time,” Pastuszak points out. The residents claim that they have asked several times for doors to be installed and an intercom to be fitted.
TBS rejects the allegations
“Only one of the owners attended the annual meeting. It is difficult to establish an action plan for the year with one person,” says Urszula Skórzyńska from TBS. It was nevertheless agreed that the company would install an intercom. However, the administrator could not install the device with the existing entrance doors. “I commissioned the manufacture of wooden doors,” Skórzyńska stresses. – “I will present the cost to the housing community. If it adopts the resolution, I will install the doors and then the intercom.” The problem is to be resolved in November.
