The owner of one of the shops is outraged by the court’s judgment. “The guy comes in, steals things, sells them later, does it repeatedly, and the court imposes such a ridiculous punishment,” says the businessman.
The judgment states that at the end of last year, a 39-year-old resident of Zgorzelec robbed five of our shops: Martes Sport, Bricomarche, Intermarche, Tesco and Biedronka on Mostowa Street. In total, he stole items worth PLN 956.82. The convicted man must, of course, pay compensation, but he is—as our source reports—insolvent, so none of the victims is likely to see any money.
The one-off sentence of 30 hours of work has provoked anger. “All in all, this thief has found quite a good way to make a living. He will work for 30 hours, and he ‘earned’ more than PLN 950 from stealing. That works out at over PLN 31 per hour,” the businessman says ironically. “He should have received 40 hours of work per month for a year, not 30 hours just once. Then stealing would not pay, but as it is, it turns out that stealing pays,” adds the affected businessman.
The judgment was issued by the Bolesławiec District Court on January 30. The affected businessman filed an objection to the judgment.
