The prosecutor has filed an indictment with the District Court in Głogów against 45-year-old Głogów resident Mariusz S., accusing him of subjecting a mixed-breed dog named Sonia to particularly cruel abuse on 6 October. (Using a leash, he tied a brick to the dog’s neck and then pushed her from a railway bridge into the Oder. After the accused left the scene, random witnesses to the incident managed to pull the dog out of the water, thereby saving her life. The same witnesses also identified the perpetrator).

On the same day, officers from the Głogów County Police Headquarters charged Mariusz S. with the crime of particularly cruel abuse of a dog. Questioned as a suspect, Mariusz S. confessed. He explained that he had wanted to kill the dog to relieve both her and his family, as the latter did not know how to help the 13-year-old sick animal, which was suffering terribly and, on some days, could not walk under her own power.

However, a veterinarian determined that Sonia was in good condition and had only minor mobility problems.

The 45-year-old defendant faces up to three years in prison. If S. is convicted, the court will also impose a ban on keeping animals, potentially for as long as 10 years.
