An officer from the Prevention Department of the Legnica City Police Headquarters noticed a man running from a grocery store in one of the towns near Legnica, carrying merchandise. He also heard the saleswoman shouting. The officer decided to prevent the thief from escaping. First, he blocked the store exit with his body, and then, when the suspect tried to push past him, the uniformed officer subdued him.
It turned out that the detainee had stolen goods worth nearly PLN 550, mainly cigarettes, alcohol and cold cuts. First, he put the items into shopping bags, and when he was supposed to pay for them, he said that he had forgotten his card and had to go to his car to get it. When the saleswoman began serving other customers, the “forgetful” man grabbed the bags and tried to run out of the store. Without success.
In the backpack the suspect was carrying, police found, among other things, pliers, screwdrivers and a knife. The would-be thief was taken into police custody. He faces up to five years behind bars. The police officer who detained the suspect was awarded a bonus.
