The prosecutor’s office has filed an indictment with the District Court in Jelenia Góra against 17-year-old Krzysztof Sz., who has been charged with intentionally creating a direct risk of a disaster in land traffic (threatening the lives and health of many people) and causing a traffic accident in which Danuta K. died.
The evidence collected shows that on August 7 in Mysłakowice, Krzysztof Sz., driving a BMW passenger car, failed to stop for a traffic check. Police officers pursued him.
While fleeing through the streets of Mysłakowice, Sz. was driving at excessive speed, at times reaching as much as 160 km/h; he ignored warning and speed-limit signs, cut corners and crossed the center line, forcing at least two oncoming passenger cars to brake sharply and at least one group of pedestrians to flee from his path.
Then, as the teenager approached an intersection, he failed to yield to an Opel Astra that was traveling properly and struck its right side. As a result of the collision, the Opel crossed into the opposite lane, then onto the pavement, and came to a stop only after hitting a building wall.
Both the Astra’s passenger, Danuta K., and its driver, Mariusz K., sustained serious injuries. The woman died in hospital the following day. At the time of the traffic accident, Sz. was under the influence of amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Krzysztof Sz. partially admitted to the charges brought against him. He explained that he does not have a driving licence but knows how to drive. He also said that he failed to stop for the traffic check because he was afraid of the police. On August 23, the teenager was placed in temporary detention for three months. He faces up to 8 years in prison.
