Waste sorting began in January. At the turn of April and May, the Municipal Services Company sold its first batch of recyclable materials. Since then, it has sold over 200 tonnes of glass, more than 60 tonnes of plastic and around 120 tonnes of paper.
"We estimate that around 10% of municipal waste is sorted. We hope that this figure will reach 15%," says Władysław Bakalarz, MZGK director for investment and environmental protection.
All this is for the benefit of the environment and to save money, although for now we can speak only of saving space at the landfill. Sales of recyclable materials are not yet sufficient to cover the costs of sorting.
