In September, the head of the gynaecology and obstetrics ward, Mariusz Bartkowiak, and his deputy, Dariusz Choma, will no longer work at the county hospital. “This is their unforced decision,” Nikolai Lambrinow, the director for medical services, tells IstotneInformacje.pl Nikolai Lambrinow, “You cannot force anyone to stay.”

Dr Bartkowiak managed the ward for six years. “He had his own vision,” Lambrinow admits. In the director’s view, however, this does not mean that the ward will be closed. “That is out of the question. There is no reason why that should happen,” he adds.

In September, the ward will be short of two doctors. It is worth noting, however, that there have been many staff changes over the past year, not only at the Bolesławiec hospital. “Everyone is looking for their place,” says Nikolai Lambrinow. “I would nevertheless like to stress that there will be no interruption.” What is more, the ward is still expected to develop. The director intends to purchase new medical equipment.

What is all the fuss about?

Following the latest press reports, an acquaintance called Dr Lambrinow and asked whether the hospital management was closing the maternity ward. “Why would we close it?” the director wonders. The ward is in good financial condition. The number of births is increasing. Last year, 800 children were born at the Bolesławiec ZOZ, while in the first half of this year there have already been 600.

As we have established, Dr Helena Szwaj will take over the duties of head of the ward from September. “She has been associated with this ward for many years and has the appropriate qualifications,” says the director for medical services. But, as he points out, it certainly will not be easy at first. The staff will have to take on more responsibilities. “Dr Szwaj will have to build a team,” Lambrinow stresses. The management is also considering signing contracts with people who previously worked at the county hospital. “I cannot imagine a situation in which women would have to give birth in Lubań,” he adds.

“There will be no problem either with newborns or with women in labour,” assures Gertruda Kaczyńska, head of the neonatal ward. In her view, three women will certainly ensure this: Helena Szwaj, Halina Kaczurowska and Renata Horbaczewicz. “When women set their minds to something, they can handle it one hundred percent,” she adds.
