On July 13, the fourth round of the Polish Motorcycle Racing Championship was held at the Poznań motorcycle racetrack. Forty-three motorcyclists competed in the GSX-R Cup class. The first to cross the finish line was Bolesławiec resident Mariusz Durynek.

“I am happy that I took first place,” the winner told IstotneInformacje.pl. “I am second in the overall standings—with a 9-point lead over the person in third place. The final round will be held on August 8–10. I will have to hold on to this position, because the points gap separating me from the leader is too large,” he added.

The Bolesławiec resident has been competing in motorcycle races for two years. Last season, he was fourth in the overall standings. On July 13 this year, he took first place with the best time—1:41.400 (the record for the over-four-kilometre track is approximately 1:33).

The motorcycle belonging to the winner of the Poznań event (a Suzuki GSX-R 1000) was adapted for racing. It reaches a speed of 200 km/h in 7.2 seconds.

A dangerous sport?

According to Mariusz Durynek, motorcycle racing is no more dangerous than football, volleyball or basketball. The Poznań track has existed for 30 years and, so far, not a single fatal accident has occurred there. Competitors most often suffer injuries to the collarbone and shoulder blade.

Why does the Bolesławiec resident take part in races? “There is always a competitive streak in a person,” he admits. “And on the track, you can compete relatively safely.” When asked what fascinates him about riding a motorcycle, he replied that you have to take a ride to understand it.
