Five middle school students from Bolesławiec qualified for the district stage of the 53rd Lower Silesian Recitation Competition. “These are people who are passionate,” emphasizes Ewa Ołenicz-Bernacka, a Polish teacher at Municipal Middle School No. 2. “The level of this year’s competition was even. Certainly, the children from the former Jelenia Góra Voivodeship had nothing to be ashamed of,” she adds.

Ewelina Szczęsna from Municipal Middle School No. 2 chose Wisława Szymborska’s text “Writing a Résumé.” As she points out, her adventure with poetry began recently. After the competition’s city qualifiers, she took part in The Play City workshops and... discovered her passion. She is currently a member of two Bolesławiec theater groups – Offensywa and Offset. She does not rule out linking her future with theater, but this is by no means the only field of art in which Ewelina wants to try her hand. She loves singing. That is why she intends to form a nu metal band (in the style of System Of A Down). Plans for the future? “I already know that I will not have an ordinary profession,” admits the middle school student. “I couldn’t work in an office from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. I don’t like routine,” she adds.

Also taking part in the district qualifiers was Paulina Szylin from Municipal Middle School No. 2. “This competition was a test of character for me,” the student says. – “It gave me a great deal. It allowed me to get to know myself better.” Paulina presented Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz’s piece “The WKD Railway Station in Milanówek near Warsaw.” “I was looking for a text in which I could express myself – what I feel and what I am like,” she admits. – “This piece says that it does not matter who you are or what you do in life. God gives us a chance anyway.” And although, as she emphasizes, she likes poetry very much, she is thinking instead about studying architecture at a university of technology.

Three middle school students from Bolesławiec qualified for the provincial qualifiers, held on May 27 and 28 in the Knights’ Hall of Oława’s town hall, including Maciej Kielar from the First Private Middle School. Maciej has been developing his recitation interests since the age of four. In this year’s competition, he recited Andrzej Waligórski’s “Zuzia.” “I knew right away that this poem was made for me. I like funny texts; I don’t feel comfortable with serious ones,” the middle school student points out. However, he does not intend to become an actor. In his opinion, it is a profession that does not provide stability in life. He plans to study law.

Jarosław Kojder, the second of those honored at the provincial stage, chose Sławomir Mrożek’s piece “Children” for his recitation. “I feel more at ease with funny texts,” explains the Municipal Middle School No. 2 student. “I suspect I wouldn’t do well with a serious text,” he adds. As he admits, he spent a long time preparing his presentation. “I wouldn’t have got this far if it weren’t for Ms. Ewa Ołenicz,” the middle school student said in an interview with IstotneInformacje.pl.

Meanwhile, Magdalena Kubat from Municipal Middle School No. 2, the third of those honored, decided to... sing. “Singing offers greater possibilities for interpretation,” she said in a conversation with us. She chose a difficult repertoire – Ewa Demarczyk’s “Grande Valse Brillante.” What determined this choice? “The desire to test myself,” Magdalena emphasizes. “And I think it worked,” she adds. The middle school student has attended music school for eight years. She plays the piano. And even if it turns out that a vocal career is not her destiny, she plans to study at a music academy.
