As stated in the justification of the decision by the Lower Silesian Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments in Wrocław: “the building, as a work constituting testimony to a bygone era, whose preservation is in the public interest due to its historical, artistic and scientific values, is subject to protection and care.”

The building—situated beside the town promenade—was erected in the Italian Neo-Renaissance style. It was built in the 1870s as the residence of Bolesławiec pharmacist Herman Mueller, an editor of specialist publications and a person involved in the city’s cultural life.

During the Second World War, the headquarters of the present-day MDK housed a Gestapo office, and immediately after the war the building was occupied by officers of the Security Office.

Entry in the register of historic monuments will make it easier for the District Starosty’s Office to obtain EU funds for renovating the MDK.
