At around 9:15 a.m. Polish time, 20 km southeast of Gardez base in southeastern Afghanistan, the patrol was attacked. The soldier was seriously wounded, probably as a result of grenade-launcher fire. Thirty-five minutes of resuscitation proved ineffective. The soldier died while being transported by helicopter to a field hospital.

Second Lieutenant Łukasz Kurowski was 28 years old and married. He graduated from the Academy of Physical Education in Wrocław and a one-year officers’ school in the same city. He had been serving in Afghanistan since September 2006. He was a member of the advisory team operating with the Polish Battle Group. He was the first casualty among Polish soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.
