Officers from Zgorzelec, together with the acting district police chief, Inspector Jan Doroszczak, were driving along one of the district’s roads when they noticed a passenger Audi with German registration plates. They began to suspect that the vehicle might have been stolen, so they decided to stop it for inspection. The driver did not stop, however; on the contrary, he began to flee. He was driving at excessive speed and violating all traffic regulations. At one point, he lost control of the vehicle. The car entered a roadside ditch, spun several times and hit a tree. The man, a 33-year-old resident of Legnica, got out of the car under his own power and was taken to hospital with general bodily injuries. He was arrested and, after his hospitalization, will answer for his actions in court.
The officers’ suspicions were confirmed: it turned out that the vehicle, worth nearly PLN 100,000, had been stolen in Germany during the night of October 4–5. Moreover, the 33-year-old driver did not have a driving licence and was driving under the influence of psychotropic substances. He now faces up to 10 years in prison. By court decision, the man was remanded in custody for three months.
