The subject came up again during a conference on the National Map of Security Threats, held on Wednesday, 5 October, at the County Police Headquarters. Bolesławiec police chief Insp. Henryk Stefanko said: “It was not a bomb being planted, but rather someone leaving it there. Either someone knew that taking away such a shell takes time and that the bomb disposal team would have a lot of work to do; or someone was afraid they had it at home and left the shell in a visible place.

“We are not considering an attack,” the county police chief stressed. “It was rather an act of human stupidity combined with ignorance of the danger posed by such a shell. So far, we have not charged anyone; the case is ongoing.”

Let us recall: on Monday, 19 September, we reported that behind the headquarters of Bolesławiec County at Piłsudskiego Square in Bolesławiec (the so-called round building), a passer-by noticed an artillery shell and notified the Municipal Police. The surrounding buildings were evacuated, including the round building, Bolesławiec City Center shopping gallery, a church, a bank and a restaurant. Screenings at the Forum cinema were cancelled. The following streets, among others, were closed: Bankowa, Kościelna, part of Asnyka and Sierpnia ’80. At around 6 p.m., bomb disposal specialists took the shell to a training ground, where it was detonated.

We will return to this subject.
