During the September session of the Bolesławiec City Council, councillor of the Forum club and initiator of the plaque’s construction Eugeniusz Jabłoński spoke, informing the councillors that the fundraising campaign for the plaque commemorating the victims of the Smolensk air disaster was nearing completion. “On behalf of the social committee for the construction of the memorial plaque, I would like to sincerely thank all the donors and contributors who, through their contribution, helped build this particular plaque,” the councillor stressed. He added: “I remind you that the main purpose of funding this plaque by the residents of Bolesławiec is to remind future generations of this great Polish national tragedy; it is a tribute to people who rendered such great service to the Republic of Poland and died on 10 April 2010 in the air disaster near Smolensk.”
So far, 253 people have supported E. Jabłoński’s initiative. The fundraising campaign will continue until the end of October this year. Approximately PLN 1,600 is still missing to cover the total costs (construction, transport and installation). The councillor is appealing for donations for this purpose. It is enough to make a transfer to the account: 77 1020 2137 0000 9502 0177 7549, entering “Donation for the construction of a memorial plaque for the victims of the Smolensk air disaster” in the transfer title.
The Smolensk plaque will be unveiled and consecrated on Sunday, 13 November at 1:00 p.m.. A tube containing the list of donors will also be embedded beside it.
Let us recall that we reported at the end of December last year that there would be a plaque commemorating the victims of the Smolensk air disaster. The subject returned at the January meeting of the City Council. E. Jabłoński informed the councillors that the Municipal Commune already had the consent of the Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments, and also provided the account number to which donations for this purpose could be made.
In April, it turned out that the social committee would not manage to unveil the plaque on the sixth anniversary of the disaster, as originally planned. (Too little money had been collected at that time.) Earlier, the Bolesławiec PiS branch and Rev. Edward Bober had protested against the plaque’s location.
We will return to this topic.
